Homestyle Beef Stew in a Slow Cooker

This home style beef recipe can use beef broth and dry red wine to enhance the flavor of the meal. The beef juices can be thicken at the end by making a gravy.

Makes 8 to 12 servings.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium carrots, thinly sliced

  • 3 medium potatoes, diced

  • 2 medium onions, sliced

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 2 – 3 pounds/ 0.9 – 1.4 kg lean beef for stew (1 inch/ 2.5 cm cubes)

  • Flour and salt

  • Cooking oil

  • 1 ½ cups canned beef broth, consommé or part broth and part dry red wine

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened

  • 3 tablespoons flour

Cooking steps

  • Layer vegetables in an electric cooker, then sprinkle with salt.
  • Coat beef with a mixture of flour and salt.
  • Brown in oil in a large pan, spoon beef cubes onto vegetables.
  • Add broth to pan, stirring to loosen browned particles.
  • Pour broth into your slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on Low 8 -10 hours.
  • To thicken gravy, make a paste of butter and flour. Add to stew liquid, stir to blend.
  • Cover and cook on High 1 hour.
